Mattress Topper : The What and The Why

Whatever you sleep on, everyone has known the terror of an uncomfortable sleep! The short-term effects of sleeplessness and grumpiness and back pain, and the long-term effects range from high blood pressure, diabetes, heart attack, heart failure, or even stroke. However, rather than getting an entirely new bed, which can be expensive, or not fit for a short-term sleeping situation, people use a mattress topper!

First off, what is a mattress topper?
A mattress topper is a thin layer of memory foam or latex that goes on top of your mattress, but beneath your mattress protector and sheets! A mattress topper is usually used for additional comfort! But, let’s think about why you would use a mattress topper.

The number one reason why someone would use a mattress topper is that their mattress is uncomfortable. This can be helpful, to make a mattress more comfortable if you don’t want to replace the mattress, but is this the best option?

A mattress should be comfortable on its own, without needing additional padding. Additionally, a mattress topper can trap heat, and make the mattress itself break down faster.

So, while it can be a good idea if you do not want the hassle of replacing the mattress, it may end with your mattress not lasting as long.
The best option is to get a mattress that actually fits your body and gives support and comfort.
A bedroom, with grey walls, beige curtains, and a lamp with a white lampshade. In the center of the room is a twin mattress, with a headboard. The head is raised.

However, they can be very useful as long as you know the risks of using them!

What types are there?

There are a lot of different types of mattress toppers, but we can sort them into the three most common categories!

First off, there’s a latex topper! A latex topper is much the same as a latex mattress, with all the benefits of one, for a much cheaper price. Latex is an all-natural, renewable, and entirely biodegradable material! A latex topper can offer a variable amount of comfort, depending on how thick you get it, allowing for a bit of customization. Additionally, latex is an open cell material that is breathable, while staying supportive and motion isolating!
However, some people dislike the bit of ‘bounce’ a latex topper can have, and despite its open-cell design, can still trap heat between itself and the mattress proper.
Still, if you’re looking for something supportive and comfortable, a latex mattress topper can take any bed up a level!

Next, we have memory foam! Similar to latex, polyurethane foam, often referred to as memory foam, is found almost everywhere. Bathmats or shoes, memory foam is the most common material found in making things comfortable. Compared to latex, it lacks the organic edge, but still can offer some comfort in the case of an uncomfortable mattress. Memory foam lacks the open cell design of latex, and as such, can trap even more heat than latex.

Finally, we have various other materials, but that can mostly be summarized as fiberfill. Think loose stuffing in a teddy bear. These are some of the cheapest options available, and upon first sleep, are very fluffy. However, they squash down very quickly, and provide very little support. Despite the low price point, these often last the shortest amount of time.

In short, there are a variety of mattress toppers for various needs, but really, a mattress should be comfortable on its own! If that is not an option though, memory foam or latex mattrress topper should be your first choice for longevity, comfort, and support!
